Rolled Fondant Flower Cake

I made this cake for my niece Katie Lynne, who turned 9 on Saturday.  She requested a "strawberry cake with blue frosting and pink flowers."  So this is what I came up with.  I used Paula Deen's strawberry cake recipe (which is delicious, by the way - very moist and rich.)  Then I frosted the cake with electric blue frosting and decorated it with rolled fondant roses.  My daughters were very excited to help me make the flowers.  (They are always begging me to let them help when I'm working on a cake, but usually I have to say no because after all, someone is paying ME to make the cake, and that person most likely has a certain standard that they expect the cake to live up to, and no offense to my beautiful and talented daughters, but that standard is often unattainable by small children aged 4, 6, and 8.)

Sooooo anyway....thankfully this cake was for my 9-year-old niece and I thought she would actually think it was kind of cool that her cousins got to help me decorate it.  I rolled out the fondant, cut it into strips, folded it, and THEN allowed the girls to roll it up into the shape of a rose.  After they handed them to me, I did a little re-shaping and re-rolling if necessary, then went ahead and put them on the cake!  They also helped me make the leaves.  Last of all, I piped around the bottom and wrote the words freehand on the top.  Then we put the top on the cake carrier on and set off to surprise the birthday girl!


P.S. She loved the cake. :)
